Christchurch National School take the honours at the inaugral Waterford National Schools tournament

Christchurch NS A and B teams emerged as the joint champions with 37 points each at the conclusion of the inaugural Waterford national schools cricket mini-tournament which was held at the city’s Regional Sports centre recently.

12 teams took part representing the Christchurch, Waterpark and De La Salle national schools at the tournament which was a joint venture run by Waterford Sports Partnership in conjunction with local club Waterford District CC and Cricket Ireland.

In total 114 pupils had their first taste of competitive activity as 12 matches were staged during the day supervised by Waterford District CC coaches Tom O’Regan and Dave Latimer assisted by club members Brett Gough, Ben Martin and Billy McGuire along with guest coach, Limerick Raiders’ Shani Alam.

Each individual school team played two matches against teams from other schools with 5 points being awarded for a win, 3 points for a draw and from 1 to 5 points being awarded in each of the categories of teamwork, good conduct and sportmanship.

Cricket Ireland Munster CDO, Jim Doran, acknowledged the great support provided by Waterford Sports Partnership, “WSP’s Pauline Cunningham has been instrumental in organising the event particularly by providing the main arena at the Regional Sports Centre for the tournament which allowed us to run three matches simultaneously”.

He went on to say that, “Of course the mini-tournament could not have been staged without the commitment and input from both the principals and teaching staff at the participating schools and the Waterford District coaches and club members both on the day and during the delivery of the recent Waterford schools programme.

Jim concluded by noting that “It’s particularly pleasing to see that the participation of one of the schools taking part, De La Salle NS, is due to Waterford District coaches Tom O’Regan and Dave Latimer using the experience gained from working alongside myself to deliver their own cricket programme to other schools in the area”.

Tom O’Regan expanded on this last point saying that, “Being able to watch and participate with Jim in the delivery of a structured programme in national schools has been very helpful and we have been able to successfully apply a similar structure ourselves to meet the growing demand for national school cricket activity in the city and county”.
