RIP Derek Brennan

Chair of Cricket Ireland, Brian MacNeice passes on condolences

It is with great sadness that for a second time this week the Irish cricket family has lost another of its best – a true friend of many, Derek Brennan passed away yesterday.

On behalf of Cricket Ireland, I extend our deepest condolences to Derek’s wife Therese, his son Ken, his daughter Lorraine, his extended family and large circle of friends.

A former Chair of the Irish Cricket Union, Derek’s contribution to cricket in his beloved club Terenure (formerly CYM), Leinster and nationally was enormous.

Personally, I am indebted to Derek for his wise counsel and advice over the years. He was always a rock of sense and someone whose opinion I greatly valued. His involvement in sport extended beyond cricket and he played a crucial role in the development of sport in Ireland through his role as President of the Federation of Irish Sport.

Perhaps, his longest lasting legacy will be the passionate volunteer work he carried out in helping establish and grow the cricket-based charity, Lord’s Taverners Ireland. Derek led the volunteer team and through his fundraising drives a significant amount of money was raised to support young people with special needs. In this alone, his tireless work will leave a lasting legacy.

Derek will be greatly missed by all of those lucky enough to have known him.

Rest in peace, Derek.

Yours sincerely,

Brian MacNeice
Chair, Cricket Ireland
