A canny seam bowler from Pembroke, Barry is known for being a wicket taker. He played for Durham from 2016 until 2018 when he had to choose between county and international cricket – he chose Ireland. We’re glad he did.

Always exciting to watch, the bristly bowler has added some batting power to his game. Barry became the first number 8 batter to score a half century against India in T20Is in August 2023.

He is a valuable wicket-taker for Ireland who can bowl at any stage in the game with good variations. For a big man, he is also quick and agile in the field, particularly as a wholehearted boundary-rider. McCarthy has struggled with injury in the latter half of 2024 and is working hard to get back out on the field in 2025.
