Ireland Under-15s got their European Championships campaign off to the best possible start with a comprehensive 9 wicket win over Guernsey at Rugby School today.
Bowling first, the Ireland bowlers got off to a flyer with Reece Kelly (3-6) picking up three scalps in no time to reduced Guernsey to 3-16.
Daniel Le Messurier (41) was the only batsman to provide any resistance to the Ireland attack as Varun Chopra returned brilliant figures of 7 overs, 2 maidens, 11 runs, 4 wickets as Guernsey were all out for 80, while Morgan Topping was also among the wickets with 3-12 off six overs.
Jamie Grassi and Sam Murphy opened the batting for Ireland, with the former in aggressive mood from the off as Ireland raced to 33-0 off just three overs; Grassi scoring 25 of those. And that became 50 for no loss as Grassi launched a huge maximum over long on to move his own score on to 34*, Murphy playing the supporting role on 8*.
Grassi (40) was caught going for another big one over mid-off in the 13th over with the score on 63, which brought Harry Tector to the wicket and together they saw Ireland over the line in the 18th over.
Ireland’s next match is against the Netherlands tomorrow. Play gets underway at Rugby School at 11am.
