West Indies beat the odds to make Women’s World Cup Final

England and New Zealand’s women’s teams have failed to make the final of the ICC Women’s World Cup at the hands of underdogs West Indies.
The West Indies women’s team have beaten Australia for the first time in their history to claim a spot in the ICC Women’s World Cup final. In a tournament that has been filled with upsets, Australia were the only unbeaten side at the beginning of today.

New Zealand and England’s encounter today was thought of as a winner-takes-all clash, with most neutrals expecting Australia to turn over West Indies.

The underdogs had other ideas, however, and with the help of a quickfire Deandra Dottin 60 from 67 balls, West Indies posted a below-par 164. Australia were well on the way to passing the total but incredibly lost six wickets for just 26 runs to be all out for 156 and spark jubilant celebrations amongst the West Indian Women.

New Zealand lost to West Indies on Monday which meant that a victory against Australia would see the women from the Caribbean automatically through to the final. Australia had not lost a game in the tournament, though, so England and New Zealand were justified in thinking they still had a good chance to make the final.

New Zealand lost by 15 runs after they were all out for 251 chasing England’s total of 266, but the two sides will play again on Friday in the third place play-off. World Champions England are sure to be deeply disappointed to miss out on the chance to play Australia in the final on Sunday February 17th in Mumbai. Meanwhile, South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 110 runs in the other game of the day but they too will play off again for 5th place on Friday.
