Toyota Super 3s season so far

The Toyota Super 3s league continues throughout the 2017 season. Gathering the best talent from across the country it’s a competition Ireland captain Laura Delany acknowledges “the players see as a platform to be selected for Ireland”.
For the players it is more than that however. Delany continued “it’s a league in and of itself and the players are all incredibly competitive, we want to play all the games and see who comes out on top.”

Unfortunately poor early season weather led to some postponements in the Super 3s calendar, which, though obviously nobody’s fault, was disappointing for Delany. “We came back from a great tour of South Africa where we came together as a group and everyone was on such a high winning the 3rd place play-off with Zimbabwe. We all just wanted to keep going with our clubs and Super 3s so it was a pity from a momentum perspective.”

Not that momentum seemed to be an issue for Delany when the Toyota Super 3s did get underway. Leading her Typhoons against the Scorchers, Laura top-scored with 75 runs. It wasn’t enough on the day to prevent Kim Garth’s Scorcher emerging victorious however.

“It was a great game and Kim (3-19) bowled incredibly well, including some brilliant bouncers that she wouldn’t always bowl at international level. Lucy O’Reilly (26) batted really well at 4, again something she wouldn’t always have an opportunity to do at international level.”

Delany is delighted that the players get the chance to practice these skills at a high level before they make the next step to international cricket. “The more Super 3 games that are played, the more the game grows. Especially with the number of players from the northern unions who are involved with squads this season. It’s brilliant to have this new blood involved and shows the development of the game in Ireland.”

In the second match of the Super 3 season it was the Scorchers who again came out on top, this time over the Dragons. Cecilia Joyce was the stand out batsman for the Dragons in their 50 overs. She top-scored with 83 (125 balls) of their total of 163 all out.

Chasing 164 for victory the Scorchers lost Gurrey and Murphy early but that brought Kim Garth (68) and Lucy O’Reilly (32) together at the crease. They added 106 runs in just over 22 overs to guide their side to the brink of victory.

O’Reilly fell just short of the victory line but the Scorchers weren’t to be denied their second victory and a place atop the Toyota Super 3 table. Their scorching form wasn’t to be halted on Sunday July 2nd either as the Typhoons were defeated for a second time, this time by 70 runs. Kim Garth and Isobel Joyce were the stars of the show, scoring 53 apiece before taking 3-28 and 4-40 respectively to seal victory.

There are just two matches scheduled to be played in the league before the end of the season and all the players will be hoping space can be found in the calendar for the four matches lost to the weather early in the season. There are also three ‘Super Sundays’ scheduled for July and August. These will see three T20 matches take place across the day from 10am, guaranteeing a day of top quality cricket and entertainment.
