Ireland Women win final group game to progress to Super Sixes

KATHMANDU, Nepal – In their final group game before the Super Sixes stage at the Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier event, Ireland managed to complete victory by 8 wickets against Namibia.

Having lost the toss, Ireland began well with the wicket of Yasmeen Khan in the second over thanks to a lifting delivery from Orla Prendergast outside off stump and a smart reflex catch from captain Gaby Lewis who was fielding at slip.

At the other end, Alana Dalzell proceeded to remove Jurriene Diergaardt from a full delivery that just managed to straighten enough to have the opening batter LBW.

In the first over outside the powerplay, Lara McBride then struck when Kayleen Green was caught at long on by Arlene Kelly.

Ireland, however, then had to work hard for their next which was also provided by McBride who bowled a reverse sweeping Merczerly Gorases.

The Hills’ off-spinner eventually had a third wicket with the final delivery of her spell when Prendergast took a remarkable diving catch at speed from deep midwicket to send back Mwatile.

Jane Maguire meanwhile held a very disciplined line and length at the other end to bowl both Wittmann and Benjamin, as well as having Shihepo caught by Prendergast over her shoulder at cover.

Namibia struck in the third over when Rebecca Stokell was dismissed by Tuhadeleni LBW, but Lewis and Prendergast then put on a very fluent partnership of 59 off 45 deliveries to break the back of the chase of 108.

Lewis was eventually caught from a well-timed square drive, and then Prendergast was retired out in the thirteenth over with 17 runs left to win.

With the group stage now finished, Ireland next play on 28 January 2026. Player of the Match today was Orla Prendergast (39, 1/11, 2 catches).
