St Catherine’s NS capture first Leprechaun Cup victory

St Catherine’s of Rush are this year’s Leprechaun Cup champions after beating St Mathew’s from Irishtown by 80 runs at a sunny Kenure Park yesterday.
St Catherine’s were in control from the off, posting a dominant 130-2 from their 20 overs after being asked to bat by St. Matthew’s skipper Michael O’Reilly.

The opening pair of Andrew Donehy (35) and (38) got the home side off to a flyer, putting on a 79 partnership, with both batsmen going on to retire.

It was a fine all-around performance by Donehy, who capped a great day with a 4 wicket haul as St Catherine’s bowled out St Matthew’s for 50 in the 19th over to claim their first ever Leprechaun Cup.

The final was the last in a series of games played right across Dublin over the past eight weeks. To present the trophy (sponsored by the Leprechauns CC) was Joan Mahony, while also present representing the sponsors Antalis were Arthur Vincent, marketing manager Maura Hoey and Hilary Fleming.

The Leprechaun Cup continues to be the flagship for cricket development in Leinster with many new schoolchildren now being given the opportunity to play hardball cricket during their primary school years. Running parallel with the Leprechaun Cup this year was the 11-team ‘Super League’ and also the Leprechaun Cup’ Cailiní’ for girls schools.
