The squads have been announced for the second game in the RSA Inter-Regional one-day series, which will take place on Sunday (July 22) at Waringstown starting at 12pm.

Andrew White skippers the Northern squad which contains seven senior Irish internationals, as well as three of the current Ireland Under 19 World Cup squad.

Instonians all-rounder James Shannon misses out due to a shoulder injury which also rules him out of the Ireland A squad to play Durham next week.

Kevin O’Brien leads a Southern squad which also looks particularly strong with no fewer than ten senior internationals included. Similar to the Northern squad, there are also two of the current Under 19 squad – Robin Kelly and Shane Getkate. Pembroke all-rounder Barry McCarthy has been ruled out after spraining his ankle during training in England.

Niall O’Brien and Tim Murtagh are both included in the Southern squad, having been released by Northants and Middlesex respectively.

Cricket Ireland have genuine ambitions to be the next Test playing nation, and for Performance Director Richard Holdsworth, the game is a pre-cursor of things to come.

“One of the conditions to gaining Full Member status is a first-class domestic structure and we see this as a stepping stone towards that, helping players bridge the gap between club and international cricket.

“We are delighted that Waringstown Cricket Club has supported the hosting of this game, and with free admission I’m sure a large crowd will turn out to watch what is certain to be a high quality encounter. These are two very strong North and South squads, the game is sure to be a very competitive and high level match, and will allow Phil Simmons and the national selectors to further look at our talented players ahead of a busy August when South Africa A are touring Ireland.”
