Defending champions the Scorchers got their 2016 Toyota Super 3’s campaign under way with a hard fought win over the Typhoons in a low scoring match at Merrion.
Cath Dalton (61) had got the Typhoons back on track with a brilliant half century after a flurry of early wickets from Kim Garth (2-25) and Lucy O’Reilly (4-19) had put the Scorchers well in control of the game, but the Middlesex batter led a comeback with the support of Naomi Matthews before Orla Martin (2-12) bowled an excellent spell to prevent the Typhoons from getting too far ahead of the game, eventually bowling them out for 116.

Garth and O’Reilly both struck in their respective second overs to dismiss openers Clare Shillington (5) and Leah Paul (0), with Paul getting a fine edge through to wicket keeper Meg Kendal while Shillington was victim of a superb caught and bowled by Lucy O’Reilly.

When Kate McKenna (0) was unlucky to have a ball keep low and be bowled in the same O’Reilly over the Typhoons were in real trouble at 9-3.

Dalton and Anna Peterson steadied the ship somewhat for the Typhoons, but Peterson became Garth’s second victim when she was bowled by a superb ball that cut back in and left the New Zealander with no chance. Naomi Matthews came in for the Typhoons and built a brilliant partnership with Dalton under pressure, the pair adding 53 before Matthews was run out for 23 sparting the start of another collapse for the Typhoons.

Orla Martin of Phoenix was the main catalyst for the Scorchers taking two wickets for 12 runs as four wickets fell for just 11 runs to take the Typhoons from 78-4 to 89-8 and swing the momentum back in favour of the Scorchers.

Dalton batted incredibly well with the tail and was able to 19 more before she was eventually dismissed by a returning O’Reilly for 61, with the Typhoons only managing to post 116 before being bowled out.

In reply both Anna Kerrison (1) and Meg Kendal (5) fell early to spinner Robyn Lewis to see the Scorchers struggling on 13-2. When the sides eventually came in for tea two more wickets had fell, with Isobel Joyce (20) and Una Raymond-Hoey (17) also out after making an initial recovery and looking like they may lead the Scorchers to a comfortable victory.

With the score at 61-4 over the tea break the game was in the balance, so when Lewis (3-18) picked up her third wicket shortly after the restart to dismiss O’Reilly (7) the Typhoons felt they were in with a chance.

With the game in the balance skipper Kim Garth and Hannah Grieve showed maturity and patience to see out the game, with the dangerous Anna Peterson (0-23) and Robyn Lewis (3-18) still bowling, the pair saw them off and made their way to the target of 117 without drama, with the pair finishing 30 (Garth) and 13 (Grieve) not out respectively.

The Toyota Super 3’s continues next weekend when the Scorchers take on the Dragons at Downpatrick in the NCU
