The North West Cricket Union has unveiled Peter McCartney as the region’s General Manager after he was appointed to the newly-created post which is set to take effect from mid-April onwards.

Funded jointly by Cricket Ireland, ICC and Sport NI, the General Manager job will see Peter work closely with the other new incumbents in Leinster and the NCU as the parent body moves to strengthen the support structure at all levels throughout the island.
The new GM is no stranger to the boardroom, and as well as being the Union Treasurer for the past four years, Peter also runs the family Accountancy firm.

He will now become largely responsible for overseeing the organisation and development of the game both at local level and beyond while ensuring the success of the North West strategic plan and obviously that of Cricket Ireland.

Given his standing within the North West, this is likely to be an appointment warmly welcomed across the board. Speaking on behalf of the Union, Chairman Andrew Fleming was more than happy that they had got their man.

“Firstly – the fact the funding being available to employ such a position is a huge boost for cricket in the North West and secondly to be able to appoint someone of Peter’s credentials, experience and work ethic is an added bonus.”

“We are very fortunate with the team of people, both professional and volunteers, who work for, and on behalf of the Union, and with the professional leadership that Peter will bring I am excited by the potential that this will unleash for the benefit of all clubs, players and officials.”

And as for the man himself, he was clearly looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“I’m delighted to be appointed as General Manager of the NWCU. Our clubs are the foundation of the NWCU and I am looking forward to working not only with them but also with the volunteers and the NWCU Board to help drive cricket forward in this region.”

“At Provincial and International level these truly are exciting times for cricket in Ireland. I believe the North West has a big part to play in these developments and I will be working closely with our fellow Provincial Unions and Cricket Ireland to help achieve success both on and off the field”.
