Cricket Ireland has announced that former international Miriam Grealey and The Hills Cricket Club coach Carrie Archer have been appointed to the Ireland Women’s selection panel.
A former international captain, Grealey is one of Ireland’s most experienced cricketers having played in 79 One-Day Internationals, as well as playing in Ireland’s only Test match, during a career that spanned 18 years.
Following her playing career, Grealey has been involved in the Ireland coaching set-up having previously been at the helm of the Ireland Under 17 Girls side, a development coach for six years and served as the Ireland head coach for two and a half years, and also previously served as chair of selectors. Miriam is currently the Pembroke 1st XI coach and oversees all of Pembroke women’s sides.
Archer is has been involved with The Hills Cricket Club for over 30 years, and has represented North Leinster and Leinster sides in addition to representing Ireland at Under 19 level before injury. It was following injury that she decided to turn to coaching, and in 1996 completed Level 2 coaching qualification.
A former Development Officer in The Hills CC for 3 years, Carrie has been responsible for coaching and managing all youth teams and women’s teams, and also assisted in coaching men’s junior sides. Her current role with the club is that of coach to the girls under 15 and under 17 side, and manager to the Women’s Division 1 team.
Archer is currently working as a teacher in a College of Further Education and she has developed skills for spotting untapped talent and is keen to bring that to the selection process.
Richard Holdsworth Performance Director, Cricket Ireland commented: “It is great to have Miriam back involved in the national structure again after a break away from the game, and being able to watch a lot more cricket now given her coaching role at Pembroke CC. She has immense experience as a player, coach and selector and will add a great deal of value to the national selectors.
“It is important to have a selector from the Fingal area and Carrie’s work at The Hills CC will give the national panel greater depth and knowledge of players playing all over Leinster. Carrie has a lot of experience in identifying and coaching talent and this will be a great asset to add to the panel.
“Whilst we do not yet have representation from the North and North-West where the growth of the girls and women’s game is rapidly improving, Head Coach Aaron Hamilton is travelling north to see the better players on a regular basis and this has resulted in a number of players representing teams in the Super 3’s; we hope this will continue to grow further in the coming years.”
