The NCU are delighted to be in a position, through the increased hours of Nigel Jones’ role as Cricket Ireland’s Regional Development Officer in the Northern Cricket Union, to be able to name the following U17 ‘Girls’ Regional Development Squad for 2013.

Following the squad selection, Andy Clement, Development Director of the NCU said: “There is no doubt that Nigel’s enthusiasm and increased hours have resulted in the union being able to offer such a player pathway experience for our promising under 17 girls here in the Northern Cricket Union. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of those that have been selected an enjoyable and successful programme and we look forward to supporting the development of girls and women’s Cricket going forward.”
Nigel Jones went on to say: “I am extremely honoured to be in this position through my increased hours with Cricket Ireland to be responsible for the delivery and further activation of Cricket Ireland strategic development plan for girls and women’s Cricket here in the NCU. The Under 17 age-group is very much a starting point in terms of Regional Development Squad at this moment in time, however, this is the first entry age-group level into Irish under age group squads – hence the focus area. I’m really looking forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead around increasing participation, creating development opportunity, supporting school and club competitions and ultimately producing future Irish International Cricketers from within the NCU system.”
The girls have been training as a squad at the Ulster University Jordanstown since early February and they will continue their ‘Indoor’ programme phase up to the end of March. Following the conclusion of the ‘indoor’ phase, there will be a further 3-4 ‘outdoor’ squad sessions during May and June time before two matches that have been planned to take place on Sunday the 16 and 23 June against the North West Cricket Union Under 17 girls team. From these two matches the intention is to select a Northern Ireland U17 girls team to take part in a pre-Irish U17 selection ‘camp’ in Dublin for early July time 2013.
