Ireland Women’s team finished a successful weekend with a seven wicket win over Wales in the ECB County Championship Division 2 today.

Ireland won the toss and elected to field first. Louise McCarthy and Amy Kenealy kept things tight up front, Wales contained to 19 for one after 12 overs. Eimear Richardson was next up and she took three wickets in quick succession to force the home team onto the back foot at 48 for four from 22.

Wales batted their overs and did well to bring their total up to 146 for seven, scoring 46 in their last eight overs to set a target of 147 for Ireland. Richardson was the pick of the bowlers turning in figures of 10-2-27-3, while McCarthy was unlucky not to take a wicket, her 10 going for just 22. Melissa Scott-Hayward also impressed with her off-spin with figures of 9-3-21-1 and Amy Kenealy was joint top wicket taker with 10-2-36-3.

Ireland lost the wicket of Clare Shillington (5) early when she was given out LBW and Laura Delany followed her soon after, scoring six before she was caught at point.

Joyce sisters Isobel and Cecelia shared a partnership 108 to take Ireland to within seven runs of victory before Cecelia was run out. Isobel carried her bat and saw her side home with a well-measured 75 from 88 balls while Eimear Richardson added four runs to the total.

After two resounding wins over the weekend, Ireland Women’s coach Jeremy Bray said, “There is still plenty to work on but it’s early in the season and I’m pleased with how the girls went about their business these past two days.

“It’s always good to start the season winning and I hope we can keep on improving as the season goes on.”
