Ireland Under-19s couldn’t capatalise on a good bowling performance in the first innings, as they lost out to their Scottish counterparts by 8 runs in a low-scoring encounter at Ayr yesterday – it’s all to play for in today’s 20-over match, with the series level 1-1.
At Ayr: FINAL SCORECARD
Bobby Gamble (3-24) and Rishi Chopra (3-33) picked up three wickets each, as Ireland bowled the hosts out for for 145 in 46 overs, after they had got off to a good start reaching 104-3 with Chris Cash (30) and Michael English (32) both getting starts.
But Ireland’s spin bowlers Chopra, Ross Allen (2-17), Ru Jones (1-13) and Fiachra Tucker (1-33) put the squeeze on the Scottish batsmen, reducing them to what looked a below par score.
A third wicket partnership of 68 between captain Jack Tector (32) and Adam Dennison (31) laid the foundations for Ireland to push on for victory after both openers went cheaply. But the Irish middle-order paid the price for a series of poor shots, and while it looked like Lorcan Tucker had rescued the chase with 37, Ireland were reduced from 80-5 to 137 all out in the 42nd over.
The sides meet again this morning in the final game of the series, a T20 at the same venue – play gets underway at 11am.
