Cricket Ireland has expressed its sadness following the death of former President Des Cashell earlier today following a short illness.
He was President of the Irish Cricket Union in 1981, having been President of the LCU and Malahide from 1974-5. He was also a very well respected Irish selector.
The President of Cricket Ireland Robin Walsh paid tribute to Cashell saying: “The cricket fraternity in Ireland and beyond will be deeply saddened by Des Cashell’s passing.
“Des was one of the great servants of Irish cricket and our debt to him is incalculable. I had the pleasure of being a fellow member of the old Irish Cricket Union Executive and I never ceased to admire his hugely insightful contribution to the advancement to the game. When Des Cashell spoke, people took note.
“I last saw Des just over a week ago when he was a surprise guest at the Clontarf CC dinner. He may have been less robust but the twinkle in the eye was as bright as ever. He held court in the most delightful way and was given a rousing reception during the official proceedings. His will be a great loss to cricket and his legion of friends. Our deepest sympathy is extended to his family circle.”
Des Cashell was born in Skerries in 1921 and played junior cricket with Raheny before moving to Malahide in the 1940’s, where he played for many years before moving to Cork due to work commitments, where he continued to enjoy his cricket.
He was a fine wicket-keeper, who stood up to all bowlers, no matter what their speed. He was also very keen on rugby, officiating as a highly respected referee.
He worked in the Insurance industry with Norwich Union and Coyle Hamilton Insurance companies.
He is survived by his wife Gemma and the sympathies of all at Cricket Ireland are extended to her and the wider family circle.

Reposing at The Kirwan Funeral Home, Fairview Strand. Removal on Thursday morning to St. Ann’s Church, Dawson Street for 11.30am Service. Funeral afterwards to Glasnevin Crematorium, due at 1.30pm.
