Cricket Ireland wish to express their heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Australian cricket and commentating legend Richie Benaud who has passed away at the age of 84.
Benaud, known to fans all over the world as the ‘voice of cricket’, was a highly respected television commentator and pundit who was a mainstay across the BBC, Channel Four and Channel Nine in Australia.

As a player Benaud was equally revered; a dominant leg-spinning all-rounder and innovative captain, the New South Wales native represented his county in 63 Test Matches between 1952 and 1964 – captaining the side on 28 occasions.

Cricket players and fans around the world have taken to social media to pay tribute to one of the game’s greats:

May he rest in peace.
