Half centuries from Simi Singh, Ed Joyce and Tyrone Kane have put Ireland Wolves in a dominant position against Scotland A after the first day of their match at YMCA CC in Dublin.

Ireland scored 350 in their first innings and reduced the visitors to 53 for 5 to put themselves very much in the box seat.
Kane was a late call-up to the squad along with YMCA’s Bobby Gamble after both Craig Young and Shane Getkate were injured in the warm-up.

The Merrion all-rounder took full advantage of the opportunity, shepherding the lower order as the Ireland tail wagged.

Kane hit 7 fours and a six in his 64, adding 80 for the 8th wicket with Jacob Mulder (32).

Ed Joyce dominated the early part of the Irish innings, benefitting from an early let-off to stroke 11 boundaries in his 65.

Jack Tector (25) and John Anderson (27) both chipped in, but it was Simi Singh who provided the real momentum to the Irish innings with yet another sparkling innings.

Playing on his home ground, the YMCA all-rounder scored yet another half-century as he top scored with 71 from 78 balls (9 fours, 3 sixes), including 24 in one over from the unfortunate Aslam.

Faced with a tricky 24 overs to negotiate before the close, Scotland wilted as Peter Chase, Nathan Smith, Tyrone Kane and Jacob Mulder, from the final ball of the day, all got among the wickets to leave the visitors reeling on 53 for 5, still 297 runs in arrears.

“I thought it was a great team performance,” said Tyrone Kane. “We were given a solid start by Ed Joyce and Jack Tector and that gave us the base to attack more and score at a good rate.

“The wicket was always doing a bit and it’s great to have them five down overnight and that puts us in a great position going into tomorrow.

“For me personally it went well. I took my time settling in. Any ball could have your name on it so you have to back yourself and play your shots. You shouldn’t be afraid to lose your wicket. I struck the ball well and tried to be the bit of glue at the end of the innings to try and get over the 300 mark and keep pushing on.

“The seamers did really well putting it in the right areas. The ball was moving about a bit so hopefully more of the same to come.”

The action at YMCA CC continues on Wednesday, once again starting at 11am.

Meanwhile at Bromsgrove, Ireland Under 19’s match against Worcestershire Academy was abandoned after just seven overs due to torrential rain.
