Ted Williamson has been appointed interim coach of the Munster Reds. The 45 year-old has been given the task of helping prepare the province for hopefully their first appearance in the revamped Hanley Energy Inter-Provincial Series.

A final decision on Munster’s inclusion in the T20 format will be taken by Cricket Ireland next month.

The former Irish international coached Leinster Lightning to back-to-back trebles and is delighted to be given the opportunity to work with his home province.

“I’m absolutely honoured to be appointed Munster Red’s Interim Coach, said Williamson. “It’s certainly a very exciting time for Irish cricket at all levels.

“Obviously, we’ll have to wait until April to confirm what our position is with regards to our entry into the Hanley Energy Inter-Provincial T20 competition but we’ll be preparing with a view to playing until that decision is made.

“Cricket in the province has gained some momentum in recent years at all levels and we currently have some quality players in national youth squads. Our immediate focus is going to be identifying and assembling a competitive and cohesive squad that can strongly compete in the T20 format,” added Williamson.

“I’m really looking forward to the different challenges that the role is going to bring but I believe that a strong Munster side can only add to the already high class stature of the Interpro’s.”

Munster Cricket Chairperson David Griffin welcomed Williamson to the role saying: “Munster Cricket are delighted that Ted has been appointed as Interim Head Coach of the Munster Reds.

“All involved in Munster Cricket hope that a positive decision regarding the Reds participation in the T20 competition will see this appointment confirmed for the full 2017 season.

“This represents another essential and positive step in the process that will see Munster return to the top level of domestic cricket in Ireland.

“As a Level Four coach and with his previous experience with Leinster Lightning ,Ted is ideally placed to prepare the Reds squad for the challenges ahead.”
