Ireland Women’s Head Coach Aaron Hamilton welcomed the new ICC Women’s World Rankings table, which sees Ireland ranked as 10th in the world.
The new rankings, which see teams earn ranking points in all formats of the game came into effect on October 1st, shortly after Ireland completed a three match IT20 series with Australia, who are ranked at number one.

Hamilton welcomed the new rankings, hailing them a great step for the women’s game in general, as well as the Ireland team.

“It’s a great step for the women’s game to have rankings like this, giving additional meaning to each game and increasing the interest from the public.

“We hope from our point of view that it gives teams more incentive to play us. We showed during the recent Australia series that we are competitive as a team, and the crowds we drew showed there is a passion for women’s cricket in Ireland.”

Those crowds saw Ireland push the World Champions, and number one ranked team, close in two of the three games with good crowds attending on all three days.

“The game is growing in Ireland and there is more and more depth in the women’s game, the best way for us to keep developing this is to keep pushing for more international games against other teams in the ranking table, those games against Australia were a great experience for us as a squad, helping us to learn and improve as a team – we need more of that.”

It is hoped the introduction of the rankings will see more teams travel to Ireland, and hosting Ireland in bi-lateral series’ as the growth of women’s cricket continues to grow globally.

The new rankings will help with this expansion of the game, helping teams and supporters to see where they are in relation to others on a yearly basis, as oppose to waiting for one off major tournaments to determine the best in the world, making games more competitive.

The rankings will be updated at the end of each Irish summer, on October 1st, with points for all games in the previous 12 months added into the table.

Rankings will work the same way as the men’s rankings, with stronger weighting given to more recent games, and higher points for beating those teams ranked higher in the table.

Ireland women are next in action at the end of November when they travel to Thailand to take part in the ICC World T20 Qualifiers, during which they hope to earn their place at yet another World T20 tournament.
