After defeat to the Scorchers in the opening Super 3’s match of 2015, the Typhoons were in action again today as they faced the Dragons at Merrion CC.

FINAL SCORECARD

With Typhoons captain Elena Tice ruled out with injury, Louise McCarthy stepped in as captain, winning the toss and asking the Dragons to bat first.

Getting the early wicket of Gaby Lewis (8) proved to be in vain as Cecelia Joyce (46) and Shauna Kavanagh (29) built a solid 70-run partnership. Laura Delany then came to the crease when Kavanagh fell, scoring an excellent 48, being well supported by Mary Waldron (23) to leave the Dragons with a fantastic base from which to accelerate in the final 15 overs.

The Typhoons bowlers came back strong though, and some aggressive bowling from McCarthy saw her finish with 4-39, with Lucy Small (2-35) and Sash Maloney (2-35) also impressing with the ball to restrict the Dragons to 248-9 when it looked like reaching 300 was a real possibility at the half-way stage.

Starting the chase openers Small (5) and Maloney (6) fell early, as did McCarthy (0) to leave the Typhoons in trouble at 21-3, but once again Kate McKenna (32) played a valuable innings to rebuild, forging a 49-run partnership with Amy Kenealy (23) before eventually being run out.

Veronica Fay-Watt and Naomi Matthews fell in quick succession as they looked to accelerate the scoring to leave the Typhoons on 88-7 from 33 overs when the rain, that had been threatening for much of the day, finally arrived at Merrion. With the light very poor and the rain falling the umpires decided no further play would be possible, meaning the Dragons won the match by 111-runs using the D/L/S method.
