A former MCC Young Cricketer, Poynter is no stranger to the historic venue and he looked right at home finishing unbeaten on 105 from 82 balls as Ireland ‘A’ successfully chased down the 250 runs required with 6.3 overs to spare.

He combined brilliantly with Greg Thompson (61 from 66), as they put on 161 for the 5th wicket.

Having lost the opening pair of Dougherty and Rankin early, Stuart Thompson (24), Lee Nelson (15) and John Mooney (20) all got starts, but the arrival of Poynter and Thompson rescued Ireland as they looked to be in trouble on 89-5.

Pick of the attack for the hosts was Warren Lee who took 3-28 with the new ball off his nine overs, capping a fine individual day all around for him.

Earlier, Lee was the aggressor with the bat for the MCC, cracking six sixes and seven fours in his knock of 90 which came off just 52 balls from number 10 as they went on to post 249 all out.

For Ireland ‘A’, Craig Young was among the wickets, taking 3-43 off his 10 overs, while there were also hauls for Eddie Richardson (2-16) and Stuart Thompson (2-29).

There was a wicket apiece for opening bowler Graeme McCarter (1-54) and spinner Greg Thompson (1-37), on what was a good day for the Irish at the Home of Cricket.

Focus now switches to the senior national side, who are gearing up for the Royal London One-Day International at Malahide. A very limited number of tickets are still available for that clash – you can secure yours by clicking here.
