After a long and distinguished career in Irish cricket, David Caldwell has been awarded an ECB ACO Shepherd-Frindall Award for a Lifetime of Achievement in cricket in the North West.
For almost 60 years, ‘Davy’ Caldwell has contributed to cricket in North West Ireland through his achievements as player, groundsman, umpire, tutor and fundraiser.

After playing in the 1950s with Creevedonnell, he joined Donemana in 1963. A left-arm seam bowler, his 11 years there brought 3 Senior Cup, 3 Senior League Championships and an Inter-Provincial cap.

His enduring love of groundsmanship began at Eglinton, where he prepared the pitch when Ireland hosted Sri Lanka in 1977. Most recently he has taken on the new ground at Bready, which hosted the 2012 ICC European Women’s T20 qualifier, and is currently under consideration for ODI status.

A panel umpire from 1988, his ability was quickly recognised and he received an Inter-Provincial appointment in 1992. Further promotion saw him stand in 12 senior Irish international matches between 1999 and 2004.

Davy became an ACU&S Umpire Tutor in 1991, and is now the local Training Officer, travelling many a mile to deliver ECB ACO Level 1/1A training courses every winter. His graduates include four current members of ICC Europe Panels and numerous other successful representative umpires.

As the tireless Secretary of the Derry Midweek League since 2004, he has also been instrumental in raising over £50,000 for local charities.
