Ireland’s Under 19’s maintained their unbeaten record at Pepsi ICC Europe U19 Division 1 being held in Jersey, which doubles as a World Cup Qualifying event, after a well-earned five wicket win over Scotland.
Final Scorecard
Bowling first a strong team bowling display restricted Scotland to just 119 all out with wickets spread between Gary McClintock (3-28), Tom Stanton (2-17) and James Mitchell (2-20) with Ireland’s reputation as a top class fielding side further enhanced by two run outs.
The highest run-scorer for Scotland was Harris Carnegie who scored 27 runs from 76 balls including four fours. Captain Neil Flack, also spent some time at the crease taking 55 balls to score 19 runs and Rory Brown chipped in with 14 runs. No other Scottish player made it into double figures, as it posted 119 all out in 44.1 overs.
Stanton commented on Ireland’s approach to bowling, stating “minimising boundaries was a key part of our bowling plan as it build pressure on the batsmen and made them play high risk shots.
“Once I know it’s my kind of deck I set quite an aggressive field and I look to attack the stumps or outside edge, while still not offering any ball to release the pressure.”
Ireland perhaps seemed to struggle a little and lost five wickets chasing the modest target, but Stanton was quick to ease any worries.
“We knew the total wasn’t a big one to chase so we wanted to look at knocking it off as quickly as possible so as to increase our net run rate for the tournament.
“This naturally involved a few higher risk shots and we lost a few wickets due to this but we did the job in getting over the line relatively quickly.”
The Scottish bowling line-up made it as difficult as possible for the Irish batters to score quickly. All of the top order made contributions, openers William McClintock (16) and Adam Dennison (17) got the chase off to a steady start, with Haris Aslam (2-17) and Scott Cameron (2-25) taking wickets to slow the scoring.
In the end, Sonny Cott (22, two fours), Gary McClintock (22, one four and two sixes) and Lorcan Tucker (13 not out) led the Irish to a very professional victory, scoring the runs in 35 overs and winning by five wickets.
The tournament continues tomorrow with Ireland taking on Jersey as they look to make it four wins from four and take another step towards World Cup qualification.
Ireland currently sit top of the table with six points and a healthy run rate of 1.550, with Scotland sitting in second with four points and an inferior run rate of 0.659.
