A brilliant hundred from Stephen Doheny and four wickets from Varun Chopra sealed an emphatic win on the first day of the under 17s tour to Scotland as part of the ICC Europe Challenge Series.
FINAL SCORECARD
On a damp and overcast day on the west coast of Scotland, Ireland Under 17s made a positive start to their three match series against Scotland with a 101-run win at Ayr.
Batting first in the conditions was always going to be difficult, but the loss of a wicket without scoring added even more pressure to the Ireland top order.
Jamie Grassi (20) and Ross McCay (17) both made contributions as Stephen Doheny led from the front scoring an excellent 100 from 122 balls before being run out with six overs left.
The tail wagged slightly and Ireland were bowled out with just one ball remaining, with the side doing extremely well to make it to 209 from their 50 overs considering the conditions and how difficult batting was in the morning.
Scotland were never behind the required run rate as they flew out of the blocks in reply, but a steady stream of batters heading back to the pavilion proved their downfall as the Irish bowlers took advantage of the conditions.
Varun Chopra took four wickets for 22 runs in his ten over spell as Scotland failed to take advantage of a good start and were left well short of their target.
Morgan Topping bowled a terrific ten over spell picking up two wicket for just 16 runs, while fellow spinner Ben White took 1-11.
Rory Anders returned to the attack to finish off the innings, picking up the final wicket to end with figures of 2-16 and see Scotland bowled out for just 108, giving Ireland a 101 run victory in the first of three matches to be held this week. The team are back in action in another 50-over tie tomorrow.
