Ireland’s Under 17’s rounded off a successful week with yet another win against their Dutch counterparts in Cork, meaning they win the ICC Europe Challenge Series 3-0.
FINAL SCORECARD
Having already won both of the 50-over ties this week, Ireland strolled to a 51-run victory in the only T20 match of the series, scoring 140-5 before bowling out the Netherlands for 89.
Morgan Topping (2-6) and Varun Chopra (2-9) took two wickets each, with Topping also getting a run out as Ireland’s attack proved it’s all round ability, with seven different bowlers all getting wickets as just four of Netherland’s batsmen managed to reach double figures chasing an unlikely 141 to win.
Earlier in the day skipper Stephen Doheny was dismissed from the first ball of the game, but his opening partner Fionn Hand scored an impressive 32 from just 19 ball, including six boundaries.
Fiachra Tucker continued his strong form with the bat with a run-a-ball 42 before falling in the last over, with contributions from Harry Tector (15), Jamie Grassi (21) and Ross McCay (15*) ensuring the home side set a formidable 140 from their 20 overs despite the loss of Doheny from the first ball.
In truth the Dutch side were never going to get close to the target based on the performances of Ireland’s bowlers in the past two days, but the professional and efficient manner in which the Irish attack finished off the Dutch showed they were not taking anything for granted in the final match of the series.
Next up for the Under 17’s is a trip to Scotland in mid-August, where they will hope to take the momentum from these Dutch games into a three match series against Scotland on the 11, 12 and 13th of August.
