Tributes were paid today by Cricket Ireland to Leo Durity, President of Munster Cricket and Cricket Ireland Board Director, who passed away last night.
Cricket Ireland Chairman Ross McCollum said: “We were all shocked to hear of Leo’s untimely passing last night. All of us at Cricket Ireland, especially the Board that Leo served with distinction these last few years, send our deepest condolences to Leo’s family at this desperately sad time. Munster and Irish Cricket have lost a truly strong advocate and a great friend. “.
Joe Doherty, Chair of Cricket and Cricket Ireland Board Member, paid tribute to Leo Durity saying: “Leo was a very dear colleague on the Cricket Ireland board. Although of Trinidadian heritage, he was a proud man of Munster, and his contributions to the board on behalf of cricket in his adopted province were always robust and constructive.
His commitment to cricket in the Southern Province was matched only by his warmth and friendliness as a fellow board member and we shared the honour of representing out two respective cricketing regions.
To his wife Ann, son Ross and the Durity family circle I offer my deepest sympathies.
Cork County offered their personal tribute saying: “It is with great sadness that Cork County Cricket Club learnt of the sudden passing of former player and current Munster Cricket Union President Leo Durity. Leo was a highly valued and respected member of Cork County down through the years both as a player and more recently in his role as provincial President.
“Leo who moved to Ireland from his birth place of Trinidad in the West Indies, has always had cricket in his blood and his infectious love of the game has rubbed off on many playing and non playing members of Cork County down through the years. Leo went on to represent Munster and captained Cork County in 1977. He will be remembered a truly stylish batsman who would always entertain the watching crowd both on and off the field.
“Leo was very much a great family man and he proudly watched as his son Ross established himself as one of the key members of the Cork County senior side and was capped at Irish U-15 level as well as captaining his Club in 2012. His presence and great wily sense of humour will be sadly missed at the Mardyke and all Club members wish to offer their sincerest condolences to his wife Ann, son Ross as well as the whole Durity family.”
