17 players including Irish all-rounder Shane Getkate have been chosen for the MCC Young Cricketers squad for the 2014 season by MCC Head Coach Mark Alleyne.
The promising young cricketers have been selected to take part in the scheme, which furthers their cricketing development. This is Shane’s second season on the squad and continues Ireland’s strong representation at the Home of Cricket.

The MCC Young Cricketers’ first competitive game of the season is against Nottinghamshire Second Eleven in the Second Eleven Trophy on Tuesday 22 April.

MCC Head Coach Mark Alleyne said: “The MCC Young Cricketers scheme is a great way for these boys to develop their games, and we work hard to develop their skills in other areas of life too.

“We’ve got some tough fixtures coming up this season and I’m looking forward to seeing players test themselves against strong opposition and hopefully grow as cricketers and as people.

“We’ve seen many players enjoy great success after coming through this scheme, and it would be great to see some of these lads go on and make a career in the game.”

The MCC Young Cricketers programme gives expert coaching to 18-20 year-olds, with the aim of helping them progress into careers in the county/international game.

They also receive training in CV writing and other life skills.

Notable ‘graduates’ from the scheme include Ian Botham and Mark Waugh, as well as current Ireland internationals William Porterfield and Kevin O’Brien, along with Ross Taylor (New Zealand) and Darren Sammy (West Indies).
