Ireland’s wait for a home win over neighbours England continues after today’s Royal London One-Day International at Malahide succumbed to the weather.
Final Scorecard

With a near capacity crowd due at Malahide for the marquee fixture, the match was eagerly anticipated and a large number of fans were in place when England skipper James Taylor won the toss and invited Ireland to bat.

William Porterfield, earning his 200th cap for Ireland, opened the batting alongside Paul Stirling. The partnership didn’t last long as a hesitation coming through for a leg-bye combined with an excellent direct hit from wicketkeeper Johnny Bairstow at the non-strikers end say Stirling on his way for 2.

His captain followed soon after, chopping on the give Mark Wood his first international scalp. This brought together the experienced pair of Ed Joyce and Niall O’Brien to face England’s quartet of quicks on a seaming pitch.

O’Brien was given a life-line early on when he flashed to gully with 4 runs to his name, but he was on his way soon after for 10 with James Vince taking the catch off Tim Bresnan’s bowling at first slip.

Ed Joyce was watchful throughout his stay, surviving a big shout for caught-behind, but umpire Mark Hawthorne correctly remained unmoved as replays showed the ball flicking his back pad on the way through to Bairstow.

Andy Balbirnie’s (5) was the final wicket of the day to fall – Jason Roy taking a brilliant catch at second slip off David Willey. Only a few more balls were possible thereafter, as the rain swept across Malahide to put a halt to proceedings. The match was eventually abandoned at 3pm.

Cricket Ireland have offered fans who attended today’s abandoned Royal London One-Day International at Malahide a choice of complimentary tickets.

Supporters can attend either the ICC World Twenty20 Cup Qualifiers weekend at Malahide at the end of July, or the three match T20 series against Scotland at Bready in mid-June.
