Leicestershire CCC announced today that Niall O’Brien has agreed an extension to his current contract at Grace Road.
Making the announcement via their website, Leicestershire confirmed the Dublin born batter has extended his contract until the end of 2016.

The popular Ireland international has scored heavily in the LV=County Championship since joining from Northamptonshire, including 971 runs at 38.84 in 2014, and also been a key figure in the Foxes one-day team.

O’Brien’s form in 2014 led him to being named the Cricketer of the Year and he also won the award for the best individual performance in the First XI after a stunning match-winning century in the RL50 at Hampshire.

The 33-year-old has amassed 7,203 runs at 36.01 and taken 372 catches and 40 stumpings in his first-class career to date, and has also scored 4,273 List A runs and 1,906 runs in T20.

He said: “I am delighted to commit my future to Leicestershire County Cricket Club. It is the start of a new dawn at Grace Road and I am very pleased to be a part of it.

“Everybody has made me feel welcome since I arrived at Leicestershire County Cricket Club, including our loyal supporters, who have been very good to me.

“We are developing a good squad with a nice blend of youth and experience and I am really looking forward to working with Wasim Khan, Andrew McDonald, all of the coaching staff and my teammates as we aim to have a successful season.”

Chief Executive Wasim Khan added: “We are thrilled that Niall is the first player of this exciting new era to commit his future to Leicestershire County Cricket Club.

“We see Niall as a key figure at the club. He is a winner, has vast international experience, including representing Ireland at seven World Cups, and is a leader both in the dressing room and on the field. Niall’s performances were excellent last season and we look forward to him continuing to play a major role for us here at Grace Road.”
