Ireland Qualify for World Cup with Thailand win

Barry McCarthy is spending the Irish winter in Australia playing for Randwick Petersham Cricket Club in Coogee. McCarthy is there as part of an Official Overseas Scholarship programme between the club and Cricket Ireland, and he is providing us with updates of how things are going down under – here’s his second instalment!
Now that the honeymoon period is over I am finally all settled in here in Sydney. I have been lucky enough to get some part time work with one of the other players at Randwick which really helps to fill the days here and has set me up with a good solid routine.
On the cricketing front I have been really enjoying my time playing second grade. On top of playing at Randwick I have also continued train with the New South Wales team at the SCG, bowling to their batters, which is very beneficial.
I’ve played mostly second grade but have been involved with the first grade team for their 20/20 campaign. We have played some serious cricket and managed to get through to the finals day which was held at the SCG.
After a clinical performance in the semi-final it would have been nice to get a run around under the lights for the final, however Mother Nature had other ideas.
It was a brilliant experience despite the weather, and to get into the pavilion and changing rooms of one of the best test grounds around was great. Hopefully the weather will hold off for the rearranged final at the end of the month in Coogee.
Also, I have recently started a batting clinic on Friday’s down at the SCG thanks to Sachin Bijaj of the global cricket acdamy. I met Sachin here in Sydney and he was extremely helpful and kindly sorted me out.
