Leinster Lightning returned to Hanley Energy Inter-provincial action with an emphatic 158-run win over the Northern Knights to take over as leaders of the Hanley IP50 competition and retain their 100% record in this year’s 50-over competition.
LIVE SCORECARD
The Lightning were boosted by the return of Kevin O’Brien and were able to boast a top five consisting fully of current Ireland internationals. It was the platform created by that top order, most notably John Anderson who made a seemingly effortless 76, and John Mooney who contributed 30 at the top of the order, that allowed fellow international Tyrone Kane, fresh from his first major international tournament, to smash 57 from just 33 balls in the closing stages of the innings.
He was supported by Dom Joyce who made 36 at slightly better than a run a ball and an impressive 39 wides from the Knights, which amounted to just part of the total of 62 extras in the Lightning total of 320, an Inter-Provincial record.
Mark Adair was the only bowler able to keep his economy rate under 5 an over as he took 2-44 from his ten overs, whilst Shane Getkate, going for 48 in his 6.5 overs, took four wickets as the Lightning were bowled out with one ball to spare.
An early breakthrough from Kane (1-36) followed by two wickets in three balls for Eddie Richardson (3-26) left the Knights on 19-3 after just four overs, putting huge pressure on professional Rassie van der Dussen, Andrew White and Greg Thompson as the remaining recognised batsmen.
When John Mooney came into the attack for a brief four over spell, taking 2-13 and dismissing van der Dussen (21) and Thompson (8) the chance of the Knights reaching their mammoth target when from slim to almost none.
Andrew White provided some staunch resistance as he made 57, remaining at the crease for almost two hours, but with Mark Adair (22) the only other Knight to make any notable contribution to scoring the Knights succumbed to a 158-run defeat when they were bowled out for 162 in the 34th over.
The match starts at 10.45am in Merrion Cricket Club on Anglesea Road, Dublin, with entry free for all spectators.
