Leinster Cricket Club hosted a “Meet the Officials” night recently, with the officials standing in the ODI series with Pakistan in attendance.
The Panel was chaired by Cricket Ireland Cricket Operations Manager Simon Dyke. He was joined by ICC Elite Officials Jeff Crowe and Ian Gould along with local Officials Richard Smith and Louis Fourie. The Panel shared their knowledge in a number of areas of the game, particularly at the top level.

Areas discussed included preparing for a series or match, particularly if it’s an overseas appointment or involving an unfamiliar team, performance on the field, dealing with player discipline, knowledge of the Laws and Playing Conditions and the benefits, or otherwise, of self-assessment and learning from one match to the next.

There then followed a Q&A from the audience, which was made up of Umpires and Scorers primarily from the Leinster area. The discussion included subjects like corruption within the game, how to cope with making incorrect decisions, and how skippers should fill in captains’ reports.

Jeff Crowe said of the evening, “I’m delighted to have been at tonight’s Meet the Officials evening. As ICC Elite Officials, it’s vital that we maintain a relationship with Umpires and Scorers throughout the world game, and if anyone here tonight picked up any advice on improving their officiating skills, then that can only be good for the game as a whole.”

Ian Gould was equally happy to help, saying “It’s great being here to meet with local officials. Having officiated at Club, County and International level, I know how tough the step up to the next level can be, and I hope I have been able to help anyone who wants to stand in bigger matches get the confidence to do so.”
