Tyrone Kane’s hat-trick gave Leinster Lightning the points in the opening fixture of the Hanley Energy Inter-Provincial Series at Stormont.
FINAL SCORECARD

Kane dismissed Shane Getkate, Peter Eakin and Andrew White (17) as the Knights collapsed alarmingly to hand victory to Lightning.

Chasing 145 for the win, the home side were coasting to victory as Nigel Jones smashed 61 from 46 balls (5 fours, 3 sixes), sharing an opening stand of 72 with Chris Dougherty (18).

However, once John Anderson (1-7) achieved the breakthrough, the wheels came off the Knights innings in alrming fashion.

James Shannon (0) lost his off stump second ball to Kevin O’Brien (1-24), Lee Nelson (2) was run out by a direct hit by Tyrone Kane, and Greg Thompson was palpably lbw first ball to Lightning skipper John Mooney (1-11).

Gary Kidd (19*) struck a few lusty drives late on, but with six needed off the last ball to secure a tie, he could only manage a single to give Lightning a five run win.

Earlier, Andrew Poynter’s unbeaten 52 from 47 balls (5 fours, 2 sixes) anchored the Lightning total of 144 for 7.
Poynter and Max Sorensen added what were to be a crucial 23 runs from the last nine deliveries, as a previously disciplined Knights attack lost it’s way.

Kenny Carroll scored a breezy 28 from 20 balls, including one huge six from James Cameron-Dow’s first ball.

Kevin O’Brien (13) and John Mooney (11) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures.

Waringstown’s Gary Kidd (2-17) was the pick of the attack on his return to the Inter-Provincial scene, but was well supported by Peter Eakin (2-21), Phil Eaglestone (1-17), and Nigel Jones (1-26).

The Knights are back in action on Monday when they face The Warriors in the 50 over Cup – play at Stormont gets under way at 10:45am.
