Ireland suffered their first defeat in the ECB Division 2 County Championship today against an unbeaten Somerset side

Ireland suffered their first defeat in the ECB Division 2 County Championship today against an unbeaten Somerset side.

Bowling first, Ireland struggled to take wickets. Ellwyn Campbell scored a well-measured 85 from 123 balls but it was Frances Wilson who caused the most problems for the girls in green when she came in at 4 and scored another 85 from just 67 balls. Lucy O’Reilly impressed in her first step up to the senior team, bowling four overs for 10 overs including one maiden.

Somerset lost seven wickets setting the target of 247. Laura Delany went at a little over five runs per over but was the pick of the bowlers after she took four wickets in her four overs. Eimear Richardson was the most economical, her 10 overs going for 37.

Ireland started brightly with the bat, Clare Shillington scoring 30 at almost a run-a-ball before she was caught leg before by Moira Comfort who bowled a superb spell of 10 overs for just 16 runs.

Ireland scored slowly after the loss of Shillington and Delany (28) and Rebecca Rolfe (6) struggled to rotate the strike before both were dismissed by Jenny Withers. Eimear Richardson (16) and Melissa Scott-Hayward (31) batted at a good rate but when both were dismissed, Ireland were in trouble.

Lauren Shrubsole took four wickets to almost close out the game for her team. Elena Tice held out well at number 10 but was stranded at 22 when Somerset claimed their last wicket.

Ireland were all-out for 170 from 41.1 overs, 77 runs short of Somerset’s total. The next County Championship matches for the girls in green are on Sunday 26th and 27th of May against Cheshire and Durham.
