Ireland Women have named a squad of fourteen to travel to La Manga for a training camp as they prepare for the upcoming ICC World T20 Qualifiers in Thailand.
The camp will take place at the end of October with the squad travelling to Spain on October 29th before returning to Ireland on November 2nd. The side will take advantage of the warm weather in Spain to get outdoors and compliment a busy indoor training schedule back in Ireland.
The squad will have a week to rest and recuperate at the end of the Irish summer, before returning to their preparations with a month of indoor training ahead of the visit to Spain. The visit to La Manga will give the squad the opportunity to get outdoors and train on grass ahead of the crucial trip to Thailand at the end of November.
There are two additions to the squad that faced Australia in the recent T20 International series in Dublin, with Middlesex batter Cath Dalton coming into the squad after gaining Irish citizenship in recent weeks and North Kildare batter Melissa Scott-Hayward also making the training squad after being involved with the side for the last two rounds of ECB County Championship matches.
The pair will strengthen the top order, giving more batting options to coach Aaron Hamilton heading into the tournament, with Chair of Selectors Rob O’Connor particularly happy to welcome Dalton to the squad.
“”It’s very exciting to be able to add a player of Cath’s experience and ability to our squad. With an average of more than 40 for Middlesex in limited overs cricket we believe she can be a valuable addition to our top order.
“Bringing Cath into the squad will add much needed competition for places and will ultimately raise the standard of women’s cricket in Ireland.”
Dalton will train with the squad in Dublin before travelling to La Manga, having already represented the Typhoons in the final Super 3’s game of the season in 2015.
Isobel Joyce, who has been struggling with a knee injury in the latter stages of the season is expected to be fully fit and as such is included in the training squad, as is her sister Celelia. The pair are not the only sisters to be included in the squad, with teenagers Gaby and Robyn Lewis also included, Robyn after winning her first senior cap in a rain-affected game against Wales last month.
That cap for Lewis means that Dalton will be the only uncapped player at the training camp, with ten of the fourteen having been to previous World Cup events. Ireland Women will travel to Thailand to take part in the ICC World T20 Qualifiers at the end of November, details can be found here.
