Ireland Women showed their support for the Irish Women’s Football Team last night when they attended the opening European Championships Qualifier at Tallaght Stadium to see Ireland take on Finland.
A crowd of 2,905 were in attendance to see the game, which was Ireland’s first in the qualifying campaign for the 2017 European Championships that will be held in the Netherlands.

An interactive fan zone kept fans entertained before the 7.30 kick off, with Ireland starting the game in confident fashion after UEFA had announced the tournament would be expanding and finishing second in the qualifying group would likely see Ireland qualify for their first European championships.

Unfortunately a speculative long range effort from Emma Koivisto took a deflection and looped over Ireland’s goalkeeper to put Finland a goal ahead at half-time.

During the interval the team were invited onto the field and welcomed by the almost 3,000 strong crowd onto the field at Tallaght with the girls receiving an extra loud cheer as they entered the field in the pouring rain, something they are definitely not used to!

After the interval Ireland continued to apply pressure to Finland, and held a huge amount of possession as they pressurised the Finnish defence, but in the end they were unable to make a breakthrough, with Finland scoring a second goal before the end of the game.

Ireland women are in action again next month with an away game in Portugal, with their next home match on November 26th when they take on Spain at Tallaght Stadium in their third qualifying match.

Cricket Ireland would like to thank the FAI and Tallaght Stadium for their invitation and hospitality at the match, and wish them the best of luck in their remaining qualifying matches, we’ll be back to support you again!
