Ireland Qualify for World Cup with Thailand win

Ireland’s Under 19 cricketers got their World Cup campaign underway earlier with the first of their World Cup warm-up matches against South Africa Under 19s in the United Arab Emirates.
Bowling first, the pick of the Ireland U19 bowlers was Tom Stanton, who took two wickets for just 28 runs in his ten over spell as South Africa Under 19s posted 277-5, Tony de Borzi top scoring with 75 before Phoenix pair Rory Anders and Ben White (1-32) combined to dismiss the left hander.
Anders also picked up a wicket for himself, ending his ten overs with 1-45, Aaron Gillespie (1-35) picking up the other wicket for Ireland Under 19s.
In reply Lorcan Tucker top scored for Ireland Under 19s with an excellent 59, but Ireland fell short, eventually being bowled out for 193.
Captain Jack Tector fell in the second over to put Ireland Under 19s on the back foot almost immediately, but 34 from Stephen Doheny and 29 from Gary McClintock steadied the ship before McClintock fell as one of three wickets inside two overs in the middle of the innings.
That slowed Ireland significantly, and after reaching his half century in 61 balls, Tucker fell trying to accelerate, the tail never looking like reaching the target and eventually being bowled out in the final over 84 runs short.
Ireland Under 19 coach Ryan Eagleson was pleased with the performance of the squad, especially considering the limited preparation they have had.
“Overall a good performance from the lads considering it was their first game of cricket in three months, and they were up against a pretty good Sounth African side who have been playing lots of cricket over the last few months.
There’s plenty of things to work on once we get to Bangladesh, but some good things to take from today’s performance.”
