Ireland beat Denmark to get back into contention

A comfortable win over Denmark coupled with Scotland defeating the Netherlands means that Ireland’s 2014 ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup dreams remain entact after day 2 of the Pepsi ICC European U19 Division 1 World Cup Qualifier.
Ireland bounced back from their opening day reversal to record a 77 run win against Denmark at Voorburg. The Irish total of 245-8 was based around a fifth wicket stand of 89 between the North Down pairing of Peter Eakin and Alistair Shields who both recorded half centuries.

The pair had come together with the game evenly poised at 89-4, following the wickets of Tyrone Kane (27) and Scott Campbell (23), who had repaired the damage following the early wickets of David Barr and James McCollum. Shields struck five boundaries in his 53 from 74 balls, while Eakin took just 68 deliveries for an excellent 54. Basit Javed (2-27) was the pick of the Danish attack, while Aqeel Amjad also bowled well to pick up 2 for 51.

In reply Denmark lost both openers cheaply but a third wicket stand of 55 between Malik and skipper Basit Javed (37) brought their side right back into serious contention at 72 for 2. However the left-arm spin duo of Ben Wylie (4-36) and Scott Campbelll (2-28) put Ireland firmly in control, and they never relinquished their stranglehold on the game thereafter as wickets fell at regular intervals.

Saad Ahmad (34) and Aqeel Amjad (27) both played useful cameos but Mark Adair (2-23) and skipper Tyrone Kane (2-30) closed out the game as Denmark were dismissed for 168, Ireland completing a thoroughly deserved 77 run victory. Scotland won a low scoring contest against hosts the Netherlands at VOC Cricket Club today.

Batting first after winning the toss, the Dutch started steadily with Rahil Ahmed and Mahesh Hans putting on 35 for the opening wicket. The dismissal of Hans sparked a collapse as they went from 35-0 to 56-5 in nine overs, Nick Farrar taking four of the wickets to fall. Asad Zulfiqar top scored with 24 down the order, but he and Ahmed were the only batsmen to go past 20 and the hosts were dismissed for 139, one ball short of their full quota of fifty overs.

The run chase should have been a simple one for Scotland, but they seemed to be doing their best to avoid recording a second win. Zander Muir was the only one of their batsman to make a significant contribution, and the wickets were falling around him. Muir and Gavin Main shared in a 31 run partnership for the seventh wicket to swing the game back Scotland’s way, but Scotland got a little scare when the Netherlands took two wickets in two balls in the 46th over. Muir held his nerve though and hit the winning four to secure a two wicket win and ensure that Scotland go into the rest day top of the table as the only unbeaten team.

Jersey beat Guernsey by one wicket in a thrilling clash between the two Channel Island rivals at Kampong Cricket Club.

Jersey won the toss and elected to field first. The decision soon looked to be the correct one when the first two wickets fell in the first six overs with the score on 24. But Isaac Damarell got the Guernsey innings back on track, initially in a 39 run partnership with Luke Le Tissier. After Le Tissier was out, Damarell then shared a 73 run partnership with Oliver Nightingale for the fourth wicket which ended when Nightingale was out for 33. Damarell was out soon after having made a fine 73.

Andrew Le Page then hit a quick fire 50 from 45 balls, whilst Matthew Stokes also chipped in with 32 to take Guernsey’s total to 252-9 from their 50 overs. Paul McCafferty was the pick of the Jersey bowlers with 4-53.

Jersey’s reply started steadily, and when they lost two wickets in four balls with the score on 42-1, the game looked to be Guernsey’s for the taking. Callum Rabet and Jonty Jenner then swung the game back the way of Jersey with a 63 run partnership for the fourth wicket before Jenner and Alex Cooke put on an impressive 108 for the fifth wicket.

Jenner and Cooke fell in quick succession towards the end of the innings, sparking a collapse from 213-4 to 228-8. But James Duckett held his nerve with an unbeaten innings of 23 from 16 balls to take Jersey over the line, hitting a four from the penultimate ball to secure the one wicket win in a thrilling finish.
