Globetrotting coach Glenn Pocknall has been impressed with the talent and desire he has encountered in young Irish cricketers at the start of a six-month secondment to Cricket Ireland.
The New Zealander, who is assistant coach of Wellington Firebirds in his own country, quickly got stuck into his role with the Cricket Ireland Performance team at a recent U19 training camp held at Balrothery.
Pocknall said “It was exciting to work with the next crop of international players. Seeing the hunger and commitment they possess has to be good for the future of Irish Cricket.”
He has also worked with the Irish Women’s squad and will be on hand during the RSA Inter-Provincial Series to pass on his experience from coaching in New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, India, Netherlands and England, where he spent time with Ed Joyce’s side Sussex.
The 35-year-old said: “Working with the Ireland Women’s team is a great opportunity to pass on the knowledge I’ve gained as a coach. Seeing the passion and skills they possess is very exciting and highlights that the women’s game is on the up across the country.”
Pocknall is the High Performance Manager for CricHQ, a New Zealand company that develops video, smart phone and other cutting edge technology to assist scoring and coaching, and his time in Ireland is part of a commercial partnership with Cricket Ireland.
Qualified at all levels of development, he has also worked with current Black Cap internationals, James Franklin, Grant Elliott, Mark Gillespie, and Luke Ronchi,
Cricket Ireland Performance Director Richard Holdsworth believes that the New Zealander is ideally placed to contribute to Cricket Ireland’s success.
Holdsworth said: “Glenn has been a great support to the coaching staff at Cricket Ireland during the first part of the season. With his knowledge and experience, he has lots to offer coaches and players in their development.”
“The CricHQ analysis tools which he has introduced and is helping to integrate at all levels of the game in Ireland are making a key difference in the way players are identifying ways of improving their game.”
