The second ODI between Ireland and South Africa will take place in Claremont Road, where the two exciting T20 games were battled for earlier in the series. For Ireland, it will be hoped that they can return to winning ways against the opposition after an 89 run loss to the South Africans in Anglesea Road.
The main destruction that came from the South Africans was from Chloé Tryon. Her 92 from 68 deliveries gave the visitors that needed cushion when they went out to bowl. Her clean striking down the ground was something of note. However, it could have been different after she was dropped on 13. Ireland will need to hold onto those important chances to keep themselves in the game. Along with this, there were 50s from Suné Luus (52) and Laura Wolvaardt (55). Wolvaardt cut the ball many times to the boundary, and the Irish bowlers will look to take that shot away from her in the 2nd ODI. This got the South Africans up to 283/7.

Luus continued her all round performance by taking 5/36 from her 10 overs to restrict the Irish to 194 all out from 44.5 overs. She took four out of the five top order batters, and they will have to play her better in the upcoming ODI tomorrow.

However, the standout performance for the Irish was Kim Garth. Her 3-61 form 9 overs were the best figures amongst the Irish bowlers. This continued her excellent performances with the ball against the South Africans. She also took 4 wickets in the T20 leg of the series.

But what was even more impressive for her was her batting performance. The vice captain scored her maiden ODI 50, and eventually reached 72* (80). She kept it solid early on in her innings, but as the wicket started to fall from the other end, she began to open up her shoulders and take apart the South African attack. It will be hoped from an Irish perspective that Garth can continue her fine form with both bat and ball.

After the 2nd ODI in YMCA CC, the 3rd ODI will be played on Tuesday in Malahide, with the final match of the series in the Vineyard on Thursday. There is free entry for all of the games in the ODI series, including tomorrow’s game in Claremont Road.
