Thirteen women will fly to La Manga this Sunday to represent an Ireland Women’s Development Squad as they swap the sub zero temperatures of Ireland for the heat of South-Eastern Spain.
Laura Delany has been named as Captain the Development Squad heading to La Manga at Easter for a coaching camp part-funded by ICC Europe, where her team will compete in a series of T20 and 50 Over matches versus Berkshire. Acting as her Vice Captain will be the Merrion CC Leg Spinner Elena Tice.

The 20 year old, who has now played 28 Senior Internationals, has a good record at the helm, Captaining Ireland U17’s Girls in 2009 to the European Championship in the Netherlands, where she was also named Player of the Tournament. Speaking to Cricket Ireland yesterday Laura said;

“I am really excited about getting back into the captaining role. The team is comprised of some senior players and some who will be representing their country for the first time and for the majority of the team this is our first time to a La Manga Camp so we are very grateful to Cricket Ireland who have set this trip up and part-funded it along with ICC Europe.

“We will be playing against a tough side who have a lot of experienced players but we are really looking forward to the challenge and after a long hard winter indoors it will be great to test what we have practiced in these games”.

Laura’s Vice on the trip will be Elena Tice, who when 13 years of age, was the second youngest player ever to play in an International fixture:

“I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to take up the vice captain role under Laura. Its a young squad with loads of potential” said the 15 year with 15 T20I and ODI Caps.

She continued: “The matches will give great opportunities to all the girls. I’m extremely excited to go. Getting outdoors this early I feel will give us great a head start to the season. Personally I’m looking forward to getting some time at the crease and playing some tough games against an excellent side.”

The schedule will include two 50 Over and three T20 games against a Berkshire Development Squad which includes some of the Counties 1st XI players. Berks finished 5th in Div 1 of the ECB County Championships last season so a tough test undoubtedly awaits the Irish girls.
