Cricket was introduced to Scoil Bhride National School in Kill, Co. Kildare this week with great results.

The Leinster Cricket Union Development programme continues to assist in spreading the game around the province. This week it was the turn of Scoil Bhride National School Kill, Co. Kildare. Kwik cricket was introduced to all the schools 4th, 5th and 6th class pupils, which is close to 200 children in total getting to try their hand at the new sport.

The school’s state of the art astro turf pitch was used and proved a perfect venue for the sessions. The brand new school campus only opened last September and it is a school which is earmarked for a big increase in numbers in the coming years

For beginners, the pupils demonstrated impressive ability and many also had a prior knowledge of the laws of cricket. Many of the children reported they had played ‘pick up’ games of cricket before in their local green areas. They also reported following the Irelan team and IPL matches recently on Setanta Sports Ireland. This exposure to cricket via an Irish television network is undoubtedly helping spread the game throughout the entire country.

Mr. Stephen Carty, a 5th class teacher at the school commented: ‘It was great to have cricket in the school for the day. Most of the children had seen and heard of cricket before but never had a chance to give it a go. They have been taught the basics now and we hope that many of them will continue playing cricket at the nearby clubs, Halverstown,North Kildare and Adamstown. We hope this is the start of cricket in Scoil Bhride and we intend on entering a kwik cricket blitz before the summer holidays.’
