Peter Chase was left to reflect on a “dream” debut after helping Durham to a 54-run victory over Nottinghamshire.
The Irish pace merchant recorded figures of 5-64 to help dismiss the title-chasers for 320 in their second innings as Durham picked up a vital win at Emirates Durham ICG.

Chase was even on a hat-trick during the final morning when he jagged a ball off the seam and found the inside edge of Ajmal Shahzad’s bat before he had Luke Fletcher caught on the crease with his next delivery.

The 20-year-old was a relative unknown before the match, but he is now only the fourth person in the county’s history to take five wickets in an innings on debut.

“This was probably a dream performance for me.” Chase told durhamccc.co.uk.

“I couldn’t really have asked for anything else, everything went right for me today.

“I just knew that if I hit my areas, things would happen and fortunately it did. My rhythm was good, I felt very good this morning and things were happening, I wasn’t trying to do anything special.

“I don’t think it’s a day I’ll forget any time soon”

A proud Irishman who was born in Dublin, Chase remains contracted to his country and made his debut against Sri Lanka A in July.

He could only manage one wicket in his two appearances against the tourists, but consistent performances for Durham’s 2nd XI opened the door to a first team call-up.

Chase grabbed his chance in style against Nottinghamshire and his efforts haven’t gone unnoticed in his homeland.

“I’ve had a nice few messages on my phone from some of the lads back home at my club Malahide and they’re all really happy for me.

“Making my debut for Ireland was up there with the best moments ever for me really and then to come over here, I wasn’t expecting a first team call-up at all.

“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind year for me” added Chase.

The seamer is hoping to feature again before the end of the season, with three LV=County Championship games to play against Middlesex, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire.

Chase isn’t looking beyond the end of the campaign and is just keen to keep impressing Head Coach Jon Lewis.

“It’s up to the coaches for that (about next season) but hopefully if I keep performing, things will happen”
