Afghanistan beat Scotland for the second time in three days to give themselves a share of second place with 11 points from 10 matches. They started the week below four of their competitors and finish it with renewed hope of clinching one of just two World Cup berths up for grabs.
Despite Kyle Coetzer’s 133 at almost a-run-a-ball, Scotland’s total was a disappointing 259/9. Josh Davey (64) was the only other Scotland batsman to make it through the teens and the pair put on a second wicket partnership of 134 before Davey was bowled by opener Hamid Hassan.
Scotland did manage to bat the 50 overs but Coetzer’s clean striking of the ball papered over the fact that Scotland’s numbers four through to 11 only managed to score 48 between them. Coetzer was run out with 21 balls remaining and the score on 240; his teammates only able to add a further 19 in his absence.
Afghanistan’s scorecard was in complete contrast to their opponents, all seven batsmen to make it out to the crease scoring above 20 but only Mohammad Nabi passed 50 before being dismissed by Matt Machan on 51. It was Machan’s sole wicket in an otherwise forgettable game for him as his four overs went for 29.
Mohammad Shahzad began the innings with his typically brutal style and scored 48 from just 34 balls to give his team a good platform upon which to build. Afghanistan then went along at a more moderate pace before the skipper, Nabi, finished the job off.
Ireland remain at the top of the table with 13 points from their eight matches while their two recent wins put Afghanistan into a share of second with Scotland on 11 points from 10 matches. Another point behind on 10 are UAE and Netherlands from eight matches.
