Ireland U17 Women’s team nicked a tight victory at YMCA in Sandymount over their Scottish counterparts after the visitors were sitting pretty at 56-1 chasing a low total.

After batting first and making a disappointing total of 121 from just 26.5 of their allotted 40 overs, the Irish struggled to make the breakthrough early on with the ball.

In the Ireland batting innings, a number of the top order got starts, but none pushed on to a large total. Anna Kerrison (29), Hannah Grieve (25) and Robyn Lewis (19) showed they are well capable of batting at this level, but Scotland continued to get wickets at regular intervals.

The Scots were in no hurry to score their runs, instead frustrating the Irish for the first number of overs, but once Lucy O’Reilly claimed the team’s second wicket with the score on 57, it started a collapse for the Scottish with the last eight wickets coming for just 54 runs. Captain Una Raymond-Hoey bowled just one over to facilitate O’Reilly changing ends, but she took the first wicket to finish with remarkable figures of 1-0-2-1.

O’Reilly took the most wickets with four while Naomi Matthews took three. Fiona Gill also bowled well, taking the last wicket when coming back for her second spell to finish with figures of 5.3-2-18-1. The visitors were all out in the 31st over.

The teams face each other again twice today in two T20s in YMCA, the first at 10am and the second at 3pm. To follow the day’s matches, click here.
