The Inaugural RSA Cricket Ireland Awards is now just weeks away, next week the short-list of nominees will be announced for the Club Player of the year which is sponsored by O’Neills. Our final look at some potential candidates comes from Munster.
2012 was to be Cork Harlequins Captain Ted Williamson’s most successful year to date with the bat which saw him score a hugely impressive 708 runs, averaging 88.50 in all Munster competitions. It included a career best of 201 not out with 5 x 6’s and 30 x 4’s against Limerick raiders in the Munster Senior Cup. This match was also a very special one for the club as he and Ruadhan Jones put on a club record opening stand of 324. The all rounder also chipped in with 13 wickets saving his best for Quins final game against Cork County where he took 3 for 16 from 7 overs, which guided his team to victory and secured the Munster Senior league by 3 points.
The 2011 MCU player of the year Shani Alam was again in fine form this year. His 458 runs was the shining light in what was a disappointing year for the Limerick Raiders. Averaging 41.64, his 106 against Galway was his and the club’s highlight of the year. He also contributed 12 wickets with an econ of 4.35.
Saddique Mohammad was Munster’s most outstanding bowler for 2012. The Cork County spinner was in devastating form reducing many teams to tears with his 33 wickets at an average of just 5.85 with an econonmy rate of 2.37. His wickets included 3 ‘Five-fors’ and an inspirational ‘Six-for’ in the Senior Cup Final against Galway, which saw him take out the top and middle order batsmen for just 20 runs in his 10 overs. He also scored 207 runs during the season and was Cork County’s third most successful batsman for the club in Munster.
Co. Galway CC have had a gem of a player with them for many a season now. A respected and devastating allrounder in Danish Ali. He has being one of the most consistent bowlers in the Munster leagues and has won many a game for his team. 2012 was no exception for him as he took 22 wickets in 8 matches at the quite unbelieveable average of 3.56! His 4 for in the Senior Cup final was exceptional and it may have being better only for his team to drop 11 catches. Galway had a fine year which saw the promoted side finishing 3rd in Division 1 and reaching the Senior Cup Final for a third successful time. Danish also lead from the front in the RSA National cup for Galway where he took 8 wickets as they had a great run the whole way to the quarter-finals. He also contributed with 156 runs in all competitions.
