BREADY – Although there was no result, Leinster Lighting claimed the IP50 Cup to complete the inter-provincial double in 2025.
After a delayed start due to wet conditions in Bready, the match opened with Leinster Lightning winning the toss and opting to bowl first against North West Warriors in a rain-reduced game.
The other IP50 match today between Munster Reds and Northern Knights at the Mardyke had already been abandoned due to a very wet outfield which now meant Munster couldn’t catch Leinster in the table.
At Bready the match had initially been shortened to 34 overs per innings, however this was eventually reduced to 28 overs after two short rain delays.
North West Warriors posted 155-4 in their innings with Andrew Balbirnie (82* off 80) leading the way with the bat. During the innings, Balbirnie also became with the leading run scorer in this year’s IP50 Cup with 445 runs across the competition.
Leinster Lightning got to 9-1 in their chase of 166 (DLS) when rain arrived and brought an end to the game.
After being so dominant in the IP20 Trophy, the Lightning had a slightly different path in the IP50 Cup with a loss away against Munster Reds two weeks ago, and hard-fought wins at home against Northern Knights, North West Warriors and the Reds back in May.
The 2025 double also marks the successful defence of both titles by side.
