DUBLIN – Cricket in Ireland is becoming an increasingly active sport for all ages after Cricket Ireland has formalised a partnership with the Veterans Cricket Association of Ireland (VCAI) that will see the national governing body support the promotion and development of the game in the veteran playing community.

The partnership includes Cricket Ireland providing practical support around VCAI’s home fixtures, while the VCAI will strengthen connections between veteran players and Cricket Ireland to ensure opportunities remain open for those who wish to stay active and involved in the sport.

The first match – Ireland Over-40s Men playing England Over-40s Men – will see former Irish international captain William Porterfield featuring for the side for the first time. Porterfield, the current Lancashire Batting Coach, is one of six former internationals in the side, which is captained by John Anderson.

Elaine Nolan, Director of Strategy & Growth at Cricket Ireland, said:

“We are delighted to formally recognise the VCAI and the work it undertakes with players over 40 years of age who want to stay within the sport. This partnership underscores Cricket Ireland’s belief that cricket is truly a game for life—with space for every player, at every stage. Whether through elite performance or lifelong participation, cricket continues to bring people together, bridging generations through a shared love of the game.

“Cricket Ireland looks forward to working closely with VCAI in the months ahead to build a more inclusive and connected cricketing community—one where every player’s journey is recognised, valued, and celebrated.”

Greg Molins, from the VCAI who was capped 25 times by Ireland, said:

“Over the last few years, these games have been a great way to renew old friendships, and forge new ones along the way. We are very pleased to have the backing of Cricket Ireland and welcome the official recognition for the work of the VCAI. Together, we can help make cricket more accessible for those wanting to play on into their 40s, 50s and beyond.

“With regards to the upcoming game, it’s fantastic to have someone of William Porterfield’s calibre in the squad. He’s been a tremendous servant to Irish cricket, and his presence will no doubt lift the entire team. He’s one of four new faces in the squad, alongside Bilal Azhar, Levon Shields and Conor Kelly.

“It should be another great game and we are all really looking forward to it.”
